Welcome to my new home on the web

This is the first entry on my new web page, dunno if anyone’s going to bother reading it beyond today, but I hope to keep it relatively well updated on a 3-4 times a week kind of basis.

The topic of today’s post? I don’t remember. I had a great idea this morning on the bus, but it currently escapes my memory.

Erin & I are going to Edmonton (Alberta Canada) with some friends the weekend after next, I’ll be staying at the West Edmonton Mall, and Erin’s going to stay at her grandparents place. I think we might be looking at laptops when we’re there. I don’t know if we’ll actually buy one, but if the right one strikes our fancy, then it’s a definate possibility.

Why do we want a laptop? Couple of reasons, actually. First, it will complement the digital camera quite nicely – a portable place to unload the pictures, without such restrictive size limitations – the 340Mb microdrive is plenty of space most of the time, but I anticipate that we’ll fill it up quite quickly when we’re on vacation this coming winter.

Secondly, it would be nice to be able to do some book-keeping type things on the computer without having to sit in the computer room to do it – while watching TV, we (Erin) could enter reciepts into Microsoft Money, to keep track of our finances. Currently this task keeps getting behind by a couple of months, at which point Money isn’t all that useful :)

What made us think about a laptop now? I don’t really know. We went to a used computer shop nearby a couple of weeks ago, and were kinda surprised at how expensive even the used laptops were. Then I read an article online about how sub $1000 (US) notebooks are making inroads, so I went and priced out a notebook at Dell and was surprised to find that I could pick up a new notebook for around the same price as some of the old clunkers at the used shop.

I really have to work on my design skills, cause as of right now, this is one ugly page :) I’m hoping to use Cascading Style Sheets to pretty the site up, but it’ll likely take a while until I’m comfortable with how it looks.

Ok, I’ve written enough for now – if my brilliant idea comes back to me, I’ll put up another post later today.
