Today’s the big day

Erin’s getting her wisdom teeth out this afternoon. I’m expecting a phone call ~2:30 or 3:00 to tell me to go pick her up and drive her home. Hopefully it all goes well.

Also, I’m playing around with some alternative forum solutions (I’m happy with the comments system at this point) I have one installed on the f2s server, but I’m not enthralled with it. I think I’ll look at another one at some point during this lunch break.

One of the guys at work had a pretty good story yesterday - I’ll recap it here, cause I think it’s pretty funny. We’ll call the guy “Jim” (cause that’s his name :)

Tuesday, Jim’s eight year old son came home from school and told him that there was “some guy in the trees with a gun” at school. Jim didn’t pay much attention, because his son has a pretty active imagination.

Wednesday morning rolls around, and Jim is on the bus with someone whose child goes to the same school as his son. Apparently their child had the same story to report. Jim called his wife, and mentioned that maybe she should find out what actually happened. She called the Vice-Principal (the Principal was away or something) and asked him about it. Apparently the Vice Principal had quite a day on Tuesday.

First thing in the morning, a bunch of kids reported an apparent corpse laying in the field by the school. Upon further investigation, it turned out to be a person laying in the field reading a book - strange in that it pretty cold out at 8:00 in the morning, there have to be better places to read a book than laying in the middle of a field. Anyways, that having been dealt with, a bunch of the students reported the “man in the tree with the gun” during morning recess. Turns out that the “gentleman” in the tree was actually the father of one of the children, his daughter was being bullied at school, so he thought he’d wear a disguise and spy on the kids during recess to find out the story. - He didn’t have a gun by the way.

Now, I’m not claiming that I’m a rocket scientist, but it seems to me that climbing a tree dressed as an old man to spy on children isn’t the wisest of ideas. Certainly won’t have helped out his daughter in any case…

Ok, Simpsons quote then

Just came across a good one:

“Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter” - Homer

Whoops

I went to all the trouble of setting up the new comments system on www.f2s.com then forgot to put the function call in the body onload which puts the comment count on the page :)

There, I’ve gone and done it.

Erin went to Tai Chi last night. She seems to be really enjoying it. She gets her wisdom teeth taken out by an Oral Surgeon tomorrow, which she has been dreading for the last two or three months. Hopefully it goes well, and she’s up and back to normal before too long.

I’ve decided to discontinue the Simpsons quote of the day - it was just too restricting. I’m opening it up to just random quotes from random TV shows…

Today’s quote comes from Sledgehammer “Hey, haven’t I seen you on a box of oatmeal?” - Sledge after meeting a couple of ‘Manynote’ people.

New comments system

I found a different PHP host, I think I’ll set up a mirror of this site there as well. Anyways, the end result is that I’ve got a modified version of DotComments running on it, so the comment section is far different than it used to be - plus now it does a dynamic load of the number of comments for each entry, which means that if you wait it’ll tell you how many comments there are on a story. The comments are still under construction though, because I see lots of room for improvement/customization in the PHP code - I don’t know any PHP, but it doesn’t seem that difficult to learn enough to get the job done. I might also look into hosting the forum off of the similar code, but we’ll see how it goes with the comments first.

Be aware that the comments are being hosted on a free hosting site, so it might not be the fastest site you’ve ever seen.

Simpsons quote of the day - Ok, I don’t have one. I’m tapped out. I’m not a quote machine. I’ll try to bring them back next time.

Upgraded to Blog 5

I finally did it, I upgraded to the latest version of Blog. It adds speel chacking, and a - what’s the name of that book that you can look in to get other words that mean the same thing? ;) In case you missed it, I was just playing around, and yes, I do know what a thesaurus is, and I also know how to spell “spell” as well as “checking” - no emails telling me that I’m not funny, I’m quite aware of the fact.

I’d like to take this moment to speak on the indescribably stupid people who run the CFL. First, they say they are going to go ahead with the weekend’s schedule, then they say that they are not going to play this weekend, then they re-schedule three of the four games for tonight, with the fourth left hanging. I’ve seen less waffles on a Sunday at the local Grainfields (sorry, it’s the only link I could find - and I didn’t want to resort to IHOP or Denny’s style references)

Personally I don’t think that the decision to play this weekend was that bad, but if you’re going to make a decision, stick with it. Nobody would be too upset if they hadn’t played this weekend, of course you risk pushing the Grey Cup game back a week, and the weather in Montreal could get quite nasty, but that’s the Grey Cup, that’s football.

Really though, this entry was made to test out the new features of Blog 5 (beta1) - Gee it’s too bad that I already used up that “Oh No - Beta” quote (though at the time, it was more appropriate, see I’d just finished reading about a guy who’d had his beta machines stolen from him by some dumb criminals, and how he’d had to order a machine from Japan, because there were no Beta machines for sale in North America at the time… Ok, enough of an aside for one entry)

Weekend fun

I didn’t do much this past weekend. Erin and I went to see Kiss of the Dragon at Rainbow. It was ok, but really the best scenes were in the commercial, and there wasn’t much more to it. I left the theatre kind of disappointed. I guess having watched so many Jackie Chan movies has raised my “Kung Fu Flick” standards a bit. I’m just glad that I didn’t pay $9 to see it first run. It wasn’t a bad movie, but it wasn’t a great movie either.

We also rented American Pie and Twin Dragons. We ended up watching American Pie Saturday night, and Twin Dragons last night. American pie was funny, and made me say “I don’t want to have kids” at more than one point ;) Twin Dragons was pretty good too, though I guess me liking a Jackie Chan flick isn’t too much of a stretch - No?

Watched some TV too. I got to watch two episodes of Sledge Hammer which is(was) a great show. I was somewhat surprised by the ending of the first one they showed - hostage takers flying a plane, and Dori Doreau landed it on the roof of a building… I guess I didn’t expect to see something like that for a while. Anyways, I got a couple of episodes on the 5100, so when I have a tapeful, I’ll dump them to the VCR. Classic TV at its best.

Speaking of things that were affected by Tuesday’s tragedy - apparently Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will be changed before being released to the US - the game takes place in New York, so I suppose it’s not surprising. From what I read, there won’t be any changes to the storyline, or to the game itself, they’re just removing the WTC buildings from some backgrounds or something. I wonder if that will push the release back any further.

Nothing much new with me…

I guess this is truly one of those everything/nothing web pages, cause I don’t have anything to say today. The free php server that I spotted doesn’t seem to be going back up any time soon - dunno if they plan to or not, but the “unavailable” message says that it’s only temporary. If/when they allow new web accounts to be hosted, I’ll set up the new comment system. Really all I want out of it is some way to put “X comments” where X is how many comments there are - 9 times out of 9 it’ll be 0 anyways :)
