I managed to get a working desktop computer set up last night. It turns out that my problem was with the outdated BIOS not being able to recognize 40 Gig hard drives. After visiting the manufacturer’s website, I flashed the bios, and it came up lickety split. Makes me wonder why I didn’t think of it sooner, since I think I had to do the same thing on my old machine when I first got the 40 gig drive.
Anyway, so that means that I’ve got all kinds of things to do to get it up and running properly - set up the scanner, the printer, the CD burner. Should be lots of fun in the next little bit, burning CD’s of pictures and stuff. It’s been a while since I’ve had a CD burner at my disposal.
This article on 1984 parallels is disturbing. The funny thing is that I’m not too worried about it because at some point the “American Way” was bound to stumble. This could be the first great test for the American “democracy” - we’ll see if it functions properly, or if the interests of the few manage to overpower the interests of the many. What’s that saying? “Absolute power corrupts abs–” — We interrupt this post to bring you this special update: “I love George W. Bush“
Simpson’s quote of the day: “Marge, I don’t want to upset you, but you’re living in a world of make believe, with flowers and bells and leprechauns and frogs wearing funny green hats…” - Homer- 2 comments

comment: An article like that could only come from San Francisco. The place where the lesbian spouse of a San Francisco government worker is suing to get the government to change her to a man. She started to get the surgery, which was covered by the health care benefits of her partner Tammy Haygood. But when Haygood was fired, the benefits were cut off, leaving the surgery only partially finished.

There are obvious slants in the article, no doubt, but surely you must have noticed the “clamping down on free speech” in the states lately, no?
Voltaire said “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” - I was always under the impression that this was the point of the constitutional right to free speech.
All that being said, I think we’re still a long way from 1984, but (to spout another platitude) “…the price of liberty is eternal vigilance.” Thomas Jefferson.
