Dear Greg,

Google seems to keep sending people here, so my hits have skyrocketed. I looked through the search terms, and I keep finding these questions. The kind of questions that people want to know the answer to, but likely didn’t find on this site. There are even some that I know the answer to, so I’m going to answer them - that way when the next person looks for the answer to that question, they won’t be disappointed.

Question 1 How can i log in to nt4 if i can’t remember my password?

Good question, I’m glad you asked. You can learn how to do this here - if that link is dead, just do a search for chntpw - that’s the tool that lets you do it.

Question 2 Fleshy-headed mutant… are you friendly?

Yes

Question 3 What’s the name of that book?

Well, I’m just guessing here, but is it Another Fine Myth?

Question 4 What part of main() void don’t you understand?

You’ve got it all backwards… It’s you that doesn’t appear to understand.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas

It was snowing rather heavily this morning, and now there’s quite a bit of slush/snow on the streets around here. I don’t think it will stick around, since the highs are in the positives for the entire forecast (five days.)

I don’t mind snow, I just don’t like slush and muck and mud, which is what we’ve got today.

Mr Burns: “No, I have a better idea! We could build real men, out of snow!”

Danger!

There was a fire alarm here this morning. I knew it wasn’t a drill, since we’d already had our drill for this year (I’d have to do a search for the day, but I remember it distinctly - it was just after ultimate had started up) Anyway, the fire trucks came screaming around the block, and cleared the building, and we got to go back inside. I suspect a memo will come out warning us not to pull the fire alarm or something - either that, or it was some punk kid in the elevator lobby.

The Habs have decided to stop playing well, now that the regular season has started up. 12 goals against in the past two games, and even in the game they won (against the Rangers) they didn’t look very good. I’ll say it right now, they’re lucky to have won that game, since the Rangers outplayed them for the first period, then collapsed. I’m hoping they pull it together soon, cause it’s no fun to watch them get beat repeatedly.

Erin’s time at work is quickly drawing to a close, and she’s got a bunch of vacation days left. She’s trying to decide when to take them to best ease her tiredness. I think she’s going to wind up taking a few four day weekends before the year is up. Since her maternity leave starts at the start of 2003, she doesn’t think it’s worthwhile taking the Christmas week off (and I can’t say I blame her.) It’s not like she’ll be feeling like travelling at that point, and I’m not taking it off anyway, so she’d just be at home by herself.

I got the wireless connection “working” again. For some reason the wireless bridge can’t see my DHCP server/router/firewall box. I accidentally discovered that it can see my web server though, so I set up some proxy stuff to get web/mail access via that machine. End result is that I don’t really have a real connection to the outside world, but I can at least browse the web and get my shaw email from the livingroom again.

The weekend that wasn’t long enough

The Thanksgiving long weekend was a nice break (note to my American readers - it was Thanksgiving in Canada this past weekend) but not nearly long enough. Saturday I went over to Al’s place and played a little NHL 2003 with him and his brother Ross. Good game, mostly good for multiplayer though. We also played a little SSX Tricky - I’m surprised to note that it’s quite a different game than SSX was. The gameplay is basically the same, but the tracks are all different, and they’ve added in a new twist - the Ubertrick. I think I’m going to have to pick it up, since I played the heck out of SSX.

In CFFL news, I got my butt handed to me again this week, so I finished out of the money. Wouldn’t you know it, the past two weeks, I’ve been destroyed by big performances by the opposition’s players. This week, I had the second higest score out of the playoff teams, but managed to lose to the team with the highest score :( Not that I’m bitter…

Frist Psot.

Erin has the day off, so we went out for lunch at The Black Duck. Mmmm Fish ‘n Chips. I like Fish ‘n Chips, but the Black Duck’s Fish ‘n Chips have to be the best in town. If they’re not, let me know, cause, as I said, I like Fish ‘n Chips.

So, that evil Toys R Us manager that was mentioned in yesterday’s comments - he was there again yesterday, rubbing his hands together in glee as I bought “Escape from Monkey Island” and “NBA Street.” Just to correct some things I said yesterday - I don’t think SSX is one of their $14.97 games now (though if you’re still interested, maybe give them a call to confirm that) and the sale is on until the 18th (ie. next Friday.) There aren’t a lot of games left, most of the good ones have sold out already, but who knows if they’ll get more stock before the week is up. Not that it matters to me, since I’ve got four new games to play with already.

That’s almost free.

I read about a sale on PS2 games at Toys R Us that’s on until Saturday. They’ve got all their “$29.99″ Greatest Hits games on sale for 50% off. I picked up Smugglers Run and Devil May Cry - each for $15.

I have some theories on what this sale could mean. When Sony came out with the “Greatest Hits” program, it was aimed pretty squarely at the used game market. I mean, it’s tough to sell a used copy of “SSX” when you can get a new copy for $30 (or $20 US.) I think it’s been successful, and nobody is really hurt too badly by it (except the people who used to buy the latest game when it comes out, then sell it six weeks later, but we hate those people anyway. ) Anyway, I think this $15 game sale could be Sony’s way of testing the waters for a “Super Greatest Hits Hyper Mega Pack” or something - in order to try an get a piece of the rental market. It kind of makes sense, in that I’d rather buy a game for $15 than rent it for a week for $7 - after it’s been around for a while. New game rentals won’t be hurt by it, since they’re only competing with old games, and the people who rent old games aren’t usually keeping up with the latest releases anyway. The only potential problem would be if the people who buy the $30 greatest hits games decide to wait and see if they get knocked down to $15 eventually too. Personally I doubt that would happen if they only chose a few of the Greatest Hits to mark down further, or wait a year or something. And really, it just generates sales, and makes money, by creating a third spike in demand. If they can sell DVDs for $15, why not games? Especially once the initial investment has been recouped.

I hope I’m right, but really, I think it’s just Toys R Us’s way of getting me to come into the store.
