I’m baaaaack

The weekend was pretty good, William travelled pretty well - two stops on the way to Calgary, and one on the way back. Not much squawking at all. Erin rode in the back with him for most of the driving (other than the first three hours, she was in the back seat with him the whole time.) I think that probably had a lot to do with how well he managed it.

Erin’s probably enjoying a nice quiet cuddle with William today, I think she felt a little deprived after sharing him with everyone all weekend.

The first round is almost done, and so far, we’re over .500 collectively, which is significantly better than we did last year. Bryan’s “favorite picking” ways have earned him top spot thus far, while Dave and JJ are pulling up the rear again so far… Funny how that works out.

Bonus post

Since pictures of William are easy to post, I’ll put this one up, which was taken by uncle Bryan

Have a happy easter everyone!

As I mentioned yesterday, Erin, William and I are driving out to Calgary tomorrow. That means that there likely won’t be a post tomorrow. I did remember some observations that I’ve been meaning to make here though.

A while back, two city police officers were convicted of driving an intoxicated native man to the outskirts of town and dumping him there. One of the officer’s is named Munson. Just thought that was quite a coincidence.

Dennis Miller lost all of my respect last week, when he made an appearance on “The Daily Show” He made some incredibly stupid/racist remarks, specifically supporting racial profiling based on the fact that the September 11th terrorists all belong to a visible minority. Newsflash - there are billions of people who belong to visible minorities that were not involved with that (or any other) terrorist act. 16/1,000,000,000 is an awfully small number when you think about it.

What amazed me about it though, is that Jon Stewart was actually laughing along with him. Apparently it’s funny when it’s happening to others. Maybe he just didn’t realize what the implications were.

Looks like there are going to be a lot of 0-1 people

Detroit just keeps on losing - I don’t think they’ll be making that comeback.

I’ve taken Thursday off this week, and Erin, William and I are going to Calgary for the long weekend. It should be good, hopefully William travels well, though we won’t know until we try. I’m not sure what Erin’s family has planned for us, but I suspect we’ll be kept busy the whole weekend. It should be a good time.

I keep thinking of little rants to post here, but by the time I get around to posting, I’ve forgotten what I wanted to rant about. I’m sure that Erin will remind me of more than a few. I think the more sleep deprived I get, the more I rant about things to her.

Hockey all the time

The playoffs have been pretty good so far this year - that’s all I’m going to say about hockey today.

William was kind of cranky Friday night, so I wound up staying up with him until around 5:00 in the morning… Erin was badly in need of sleep, and William wasn’t hungry, so I took him into the livingroom, and rocked him to sleep in the recliner. I kind of dozed on and off with him on my chest, but if I tried to get up, he would startle and scream. Not a fun time, but I managed to finally get him to sleep soundly at 5:00.

Saturday (afternoon - obviously :-)) Al and Ross came over and we threw the frisbee around a bit. It was good to get out of the house, and get some fresh air. After that, we played a little bit of PS2 - Midnight Club Racing 2, and Amplitude. Erin and I went out for supper, then a fairly late night watching CBC (I won’t mention what I was watching, cause I said I wouldn’t)

Sunday I slept in fairly late. We went over to Mom & Dad’s for supper, where William slept in the playpen that Mom bought when she found out Erin was pregnant - it was his first time in there.

People in Edmonton must be pretty happy - because of the weather, no other reason that I can think of…Geez, this is harder than I thought.

The curse of the home ice advantage

Well, one game in to each series, we’ve got seven “upsets” in the making. I’m under no illusions that all seven of these upsets will continue unabated, but it is rather remarkable that only New Jersey was able to win game one on home ice.

I watched the first OT period of the Detroit/Anahiem game - Detroit basically dominated the play, but when “unlucky” Luke Robitaille hit the crossbar, then the post - all on one shot, mind you - I was reminded of my pet playoff overtime theory. I even turned to Erin and said “This game is over, Anahiem wins.” I turned to the Vancouver/St. Louis game during the intermission, and didn’t flip back to the Detroit game. Once again, the curse of hitting the post in OT struck. Anahiem won, just as I had forseen when I heard the clang of frozen rubber bouncing off of red painted steel.

For as long as I’ve been propounding this theory, I have never witnessed it to fail. The amazing thing is that it has been 10 years since I first remarked on it - during the amazing 1993 OT-filled cup run by Montreal.

Just to expand on the theory a little, for those of you who are unaware of what it entails: If you hit a post in OT, you have essentially lost the game. The only way that you can possibly win is if the other team hits the post, in which case, it’s anyone’s game again. As an example - A vs. B: if A hits the post - they will lose, unless Team B hits the post. If B hits the post to cancel out A’s curse.

Simple enough for you?

Oh, and the shenanigans yesterday with Bryan and Darren each praising the other’s team seems a little suspicious to me… I’d check IP’s, but there’s not much point, since they use the same computer :-)

Playoff time is great.

Jason, Amy and Mya came over last night for the game, as well as Jim, Judy and Jessica. We watched the Oilers beat the Stars, William scream from being too hot, and Mya being as cute as ever. Overall it was a good night, though the Sens losing to the Islanders (and getting shut out no less) was a little surprising.

My hope is that the Oilers don’t get complacent and think that the series will get any easier now that they’ve won the first game. I’d really like to see them beat the stars for a change. Tonight’s games should prove to be interesting. I’m going to attempt to watch the Vancouver game, but I don’t know if I’ll get the chance.

Oh - as an interesting side note (especially to any of you Americans who maybe don’t understand the hockey mania that grips this country every spring) - ExpressVu added Ottawa’s CBC channel for the playoffs, so last night we had our choice of games. I watched the first half hour of Ottawa/Islanders, then over to the Oilers game.
