What do you toy?

I’ve heard great things about the Eye Toy, and had thought that it was still not available in North America. Apparently I was wrong. It’s available, and fairly reasonably priced. I think it looks like a lot of fun.

For those of you too lazy to follow the link, or too confused by the crappy interface that they have for their site…Eye Toy is basically a webcam that you hook up to your Playstation 2, and use to play games. The first game available is called “Play” which has mini games such as Wishi Washi (window washing), Kung Foo, Keep Ups (keep a soccer ball from hitting the ground) and Beat Freaks (looks like a ryhthm panic type game.) I’ve never heard a bad review - other than the fact that the single player sucks. It does look like a good “party game”

Sad Sad day

I have to abandon one of my passwords - someone accidentally saw it when typeahead was behaving slowly… One of the ones that I use in lots of places. It’s a sad sad day.

I’ve been using that password (and various forms of it) for well over a decade. I guess I’ll have to ressurect an old one, or come up with a new one or something. :(

Fortunately it’s not one of my “secure” passwords - I’ve got various levels of password security - I can usually guess which one I used based on my opinion of how secure it needs to be. Still, it’ll take me a while to change it everywhere that I use it. I really want some sort of identity dongle that I can carry around and use instead of remembering passwords and typing them in. Even some sort of thumbprint scanner, It’s not like the stuff most passwords are protecting are that valuable though.

It’s X-treme

Further to my post yesterday, an important aspect of man’s quest for space (compare with BC’s Quest for Tires) is making it accessible to a wider range of people - not just NASA astronauts and boy band members. To that end, the people behind the X Prize are offering a big bounty to whichever team can launch a vehicle carrying 3 passengers to 100 km altitude, and return them safely, then do it again two weeks later with the same vehicle.

It’s something worth watching - there are several teams working hard on the project, some of which have a good chance of doing it. Once China starts getting involved in the space race - landing a man on the moon is apparently one of their goals - the US will start pouring more money into it, and we could legimately see a base on the moon. Significant things have to be solved before that - including how to deal with loss of bone density.

Either way, it’s an interesting time to be a citizen of Earth

Space - what is it good for?

Since I was a little boy, space has fascinated me. I think if you look back through my school memories book, I checked off astronaut every time (I think I might have checked off “other” and put “superhero” one time…) It truly is the final frontier, though some would argue that we know less about the deep sea than we do about space.

This is why I had difficulties rationalizing my thoughts that humanity doesn’t need to go into space. Honestly, most people never leave their own small area of this planet - what do we need countless more planets to deal with? Just more places that most people can’t visit? There are significant problems back here on Earth - why do we spend so much money looking upward and outward?

It was a difficult thing to start thinking - as I said. I think it came about because I’m reading Children of Dune right now. Either way, I convinced myself that I was wrong.

The reason that we need to go to space is the same reason that Hilliary climbed Everest, the same reason that countless explorers and adventurers have given for what they do. “Because it’s there.” Right now, people need to be unified more than ever before. Few things could bring the world together as one than taking that first small step for mankind. Don’t get me wrong - space exploration won’t magically solve all the world’s problems, but it’s something that generations upon generations have been working towards - whether they knew it or not.

Quick post

Not much time for a post - I’m meeting Erin at the mall again for Christmas related things. I promised Al that I’d link to his new blog and now I have ;-) You may be surprised by the subject matter if you know Al.

Does the web still have popups?

Back before I found Mozilla, I remember there being a lot of popup ads, and popunder ads all over the web. I can’t remember the last one that I saw though. Are they still out there?

Despite Erin’s comments from Tuesday, William is getting better. His nose still runs some, but he’s not nearly as sick as he was, and he’s better every day. Erin’s on the mend too, though she’s still coughing quite a bit.

I played some more NHL Hitz 2003 last night. That game is laugh out loud funny - where else can you see a dog pass the puck to a pirate while wearing green jerseys with a pickle on it? I managed to up my record to 140+ hits in a game (despite 5 penalties,) which was quite fun. I think I had the puck for a grand total of 11 seconds in the game, took one shot on net, and scored (it was a one timer.) The biggest problem with that game is that it freezes fairly regularly. Unfortunately I’d forgotten that, and played about 3 or 4 games without saving my franchise when it froze the first time.

5K? I can’t begin to think how you’d fit that in there…

I came across a link to Wolfenstein 5K. Apparently I came late to the game, cause it’s well over a year old already. Still, if you haven’t seen it, check it out.

I actually found the link when reading through the archives of Game Girl Advance - which I came to via a link on Greg Kostik’s site which I have been reading for a while now. I’d tell you where I found that site, but I honestly don’t remember - probably Slashdot which I believe I heard about from a friend (a long time ago - my original ID was 43501, my current one is over 630,000.)

That’s the power of hyperlinks though - you don’t have to know how you got there, just that you got there.
