I played in my first slopitch games of the season last night. While I managed to go 2 for 3 at the plate, I also managed to get myself in a rundown between second and third, and severely misjudged some balls in the outfield/overestimated my own speed. On the plus side, I was coming really really close to tracking down some fly balls from a pretty big distance, but on the minus side, having the ball just tick off the end of your glove isn’t a positive thing, when it results in the ball getting by you, and rolling for another 150 feet (no fences) and the runner being home before the ball is thrown in to the infield. I had one funny hop get by me too, so overall, it was an embarassing night in the field for me.
I had fun though, despite the cold.
Simpson’s quote of the day: “Okay, let’s go over the ground rules. You can’t leave first until you chug a beer. Any man scoring has to chug a beer. You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings. Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.” - Umpire- 6 comments

Now THAT is a good quote for the ball team :P
The games were good last night. You can’t beat yourself up over a few missed balls, though. You haven’t played in a long time :P

I beat myself up, cause I want to get better. Two weeks from now, I want to make that catch (the one that went off the end of my glove)
For what it’s worth, it’s all internal pressure though, I don’t get upset with anyone else for making the exact same play. I just want to get better myself. Hell, we could lose 58-0 and if I played my best game, I’d be happier than a clam when chowder season is done.
I don’t mind not being responsible for winning, but I hate feeling like I contributed to losing. (likewise, if I play bad and we win, I’ll still be kicking myself over the one that got away.)
It’s just how I’m hardwired.

Hmmmm if you lose 58-0 and you play your best possible game…. YOU SUCK. No offense but I should hope you could at least get 1 run on your own. :P

Yeah, but the other team might have something to say about it. I’m not a home run hitter - I’m just as happy to get a single or a double.

Ok I’ll let it slide this time.

Actually, all things considered, it’s far better to hit singles and doubles than to try and hit home runs all the time. If everyone on the team hits a single, you end up with at least seven runs in an inning. That’s my biggest flaw…I like to swing for the fences, because I want to be the hero. If I ever get another at bat, I’ll likely start behaving and keeping it in front of the OF and beyond the infield. Guaranteed hit every time :P
