This’ll surprise some of you…

I’m getting an XBox to run the frontend of my MythTV setup upstairs. It seems like the cheapest/easiest way to put a frontend upstairs without building a machine from scratch, etc. The flipside of that is that I have to “hack” the thing so that I can run linux on it. I don’t know if that makes me a criminal or not, but I figure that if I buy the hardware I should be able to do what I want with it, as long as I’m not hurting anyone.

In a way, it’s connected to the old laptop. See we got the FL Inverter fixed just before it went for a swim and quit working. Well, yesterday, the repair place called up and said that Toshiba was issuing refunds to people who had that repair done. Our laptop was well out of warranty, so it didn’t occur to me to check for warranty service on it - not that it matters. Anyway, the end result is that we should be getting “free money” back from Toshiba, which will be earmarked for the XBox project (even though it won’t cover it totally.)

But the real impetus behind things was that William really enjoyed “The Incredibles” and wants to watch it. Since it came out on DVD yesterday, and we don’t have a DVD player upstairs, the XBox seems like a good compromise.
