Weather is a strange beast

All this week, it’s supposed to be hot and sunny. The thing about hot and sunny is that it can lead to thunderstorms… Supposedly there’s a chance of that happening tonight. We’ll see. I’m supposed to be playing ball tonight, so hopefully they weather won’t wind up cancelling ball on us.

Anyway, I was looking at some historical weather data the other day, and came across a page that showed all time records, which surprised me. Apparently the hottest day on record in Saskatoon ever was June 5th, 1988. I was 13 at the time, and I umpired softball to earn spending money. The best opportunities were during the weekend tournaments, because I’d get to ump ball games all day for both Saturday and Sunday. Figure it out - June 5th was a Sunday that year. I distinctly recall umpiring a tournament, and being out in the hot sun (wearing a black leather padded mask) and sweating my butt off. Mom brought me popsicles (or maybe it was freezies) in a cooler, but they didn’t last long. In retrospect, I’m amazed that I didn’t die from heat exhaustion or something, because I don’t deal well with heat. At the time, I thought it was just another hot day, but apparently it was a record for here.

Now, I know there are some people who read this site who think nothing of the temperature getting above 100F, and have seen temperatures much higher than that. Just remember that it also gets down to -40 without the wind here sometimes, so we’ve probably got you beat for temperature range (Unless you’re in Siberia, which gets pretty crazy)

Figured it out.

I looked at the weather forecast yesterday, and it looks like a hot week is shaping up. Given how hot my extremely long hair was, I decided to *ahem* trim it a bit. I broke out the clippers and gave myself a buzz while Erin was out of the house :)

That shaved five minutes off of my shower time in the morning too…William’s suggestion was that since we both have the same haircut, “Mommy should get her hair cut too.” No worries - she didn’t even consider it.

Other than that, and thinking wistfully about playing Ultimate, not much new yesterday. Slopitch is fun, but it’s nowhere near the workout that Ultimate is, and I’m finding that I’m missing that aspect of the game. Apparently they’ve got a C league this year which fits my philosophy (and schedule) much better, so I might have to investigate playing again next year. Plus, I think I totally missed the cups tournament this year, which is too bad.

Where to begin…

It was a long weekend, which meant there was lots of things happening.

First off, Erin’s Dad and his friend Dorothy came into town on their way to Calgary. William and Dorothy had an awful lot of fun together, and he was definitely sad to see her go. Friday afternoon we went to Kinsmen Park, and rode the rides, which was William’s first time there. We picked up an ice cream cake on the way home, and then went home for some delicious sloppy joes.

We decided to go to the fireworks this year, and managed to make it to the riverbank before they started. We were on the West side though, because we were stuck in traffic on the East side, and it didn’t look like we were going to make it to the fireworks. I think William enjoyed them, but he thought they were too long (plus he was tired.)

Saturday, we made a brief foray to the mall, where John bought me a couple of wireless controllers for the XBox as a birthday present. I had Julia on my chest in a sling, and John had William tied to his back in Erin’s wrap sling. We made the selection and purchase, then left the store with the controllers in a bag. While I headed off to find Erin and Dorothy, John and William went to sit on a bench. It was at this point that John realized that William had picked up a copy of “Grand Theft Auto” on his way out the door of EB Games. There’s a certain irony in that. Anyway, they took it back into the store, and William was not incarcerated. Then we went to Zellers to look for batteries for the controllers. The controllers set off the Zellers anti-theft alarm on the way in, so I took them to the till and had them swipe them over the demagnetizer (or whatever system it is that they use.) Still set off the alarms on the way out of the store again though.

Saturday night John took us out to India Palace (formerly Chick Peas) for supper. It was extremely tasty, and I’m going to miss them when they move from downtown to Cumberland Square at the end of the summer. Apparently the street that India Palace is on isn’t exactly a desirable neighbourhood. When I took William to the car, there was a police cruiser double parked next to our car, with an officer “discussing” things with a dishevelled looking woman. I didn’t hear much of it, but I did hear the phrase “Why are you picking on me, those other two guys are way drunker’n me.” They had a long discussion, and the police finally left telling her to get inside, because if they saw her again today it would be jail.

This all occurred while everyone else was still in the restaurant (Erin was feeding Julia, and didn’t realize that William and I had gone to the car, she thought we were just off exploring.) Anyway, it should be a sign when the apartment building next door has signs in the window saying “X is not allowed in the building. If he’s seen, call the police” for two different people. Not to mention the “furnished rooms for rent $210-$250.” sign (as a point of reference, I know someone who used to live two blocks away in an unfurnished apartment, and I know he paid at least three times that…)

Also Saturday night, Erin’s Grandma arrived - she’ll be visiting for the week.

All in all, lots going on, and I managed to watch all four football games too :)
