Acutally 8th flows pretty smoothly at 7:30, it's just not as fast as Idylwyld would be. The lights are almost always green the whole way - plus taking the Idylwyld bridge gets me downtown a block and a half from work instead of having to work my way over from Broadway/19th/4th. Not many lights, and traffic is usually pretty good on those streets. I don't know how it would work from your place, though. M aybe down 8th to Arlington then north to Main?
