As Erin mentioned, yesterday I was home with her and the kids. William was up all night, turning our house into a vomitorium. Meanwhile, I was feeling a little queasy, which didn’t help the mood much. I sent an email to a guy at work telling him that I wouldn’t be in, and mentioning a few things that needed to be done. Anyway, at around 1:00 I figured I’d check to see if the email bounced, because I wasn’t sure if I had the right email address. While I had the laptop up, I figured I’d check to see if Apple had made their big announcement yet. By how slow the site was, I was pretty sure they had.
I had previously mentioned that I was looking seriously at a Mac Mini, and the only thing holding me back was the fact that they weren’t Intel based just yet, which meant that they’d be obsolete pretty quick. Well, they announced the intel based minis yesterday, and I ordered one.
I’ll just let that sink in for a bit.
I feel particularly bad, because I had previously helped Erin’s mom make the switch to the “Dark Side” from her history of Mac. The Mini is such a compelling piece of hardware though, it’s tough to argue with it’s siren song. We wound up spending a little more than I had planned, and getting the Core Duo version. That thing should be fast. I’m a little shocked at how fast actually, but in reality, I guess I shouldn’t be - it’ll wind up costing about as much as the AMD64 system I have running Mythtv for me right now, but being slightly faster apparently - oh, and about 5% of the size.
I feel a bit like I stepped off a cliff, but honestly, this won’t be my first major OS transition. The last one was the jump to linux on the laptop - I mean that was just a week or two ago. The first one would have been the minor change from the CoCo II to the C64, then the major jump from the C64 to Windows 95. I think I had an Amiga 500 at some point in there, but I never used it much, and I think it got turfed in the move from our apartment into the basement suite on Wilson (I’d almost completely forgotten about that Amiga…Maybe I’m just imagining the whole thing.)
Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see how much of an adjustment it requires. I’ll let you know when the thing shows up in the mailbox.
