I always thought that everyone believed they were an above average driver, but I have a tale to tell of one person who has no illusions.
We got a lot of snow dumped on us yesterday, something like 6-8 inches. (As an aside to my non local readers, despite the fact I’m in Canada, we typically don’t get a whole bunch of snow at a time. 6-8 inches is a lot of snow for us - we don’t usually get that much in a one day period - it maybe happens once every year or two) Anyway…So when I got home from work, I set to work shovelling the driveway. I was out there for almost an hour, and I still haven’t finished shovelling both sides of the driveway. Once I’d dug out the side that we use, I headed out to get a few groceries. The roads were decent, but I’m sure the old car would have struggled to get around, while the van had no problems.
When I was headed home, I came across a woman on my street with her car stuck halfway across the road. She’d backed out a little too far, and overshot the ruts. Consequently she couldn’t get the car to move. I could have driven around her, but instead I pulled over and offered to help. She suggested that I should try driving while she pushed, because she said: “I’m not a very good driver”
Anyway, after rocking it back and forth a bunch, and not making much headway (I think I had about 20cm of play) I hopped out and offered to push while she drove. She hopped in, and I managed to rock it out while she had the gas pedal pinned. I got her into the ruts, and hopped in the van and went home.
Needless to say, I slept well last night.
