Listen up, Sunny.

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

The sky is a beautiful shade of blue today, after having been an ugly shade of grey for the last few days. It’s a welcome change, the days are short enough already, no need to remove the sun from all daytime hours.

William and Erin went on a “date” last night, though I think it was just to the grocery store and the library. Julia and I stayed home, and practically the only time she wasn’t crying was when Rolie Polie Olie was on TV. For some reason she was very attached to her mom last night, which is a little strange – she’s usually pretty independent.

The weekend was good – Vanier cup was fun, and despite the dire weather predictions, I was pretty cozy. I didn’t even have my jacket zipped up for most of the game. Granted, I was wearing two pairs of long underwear, a heavy Helly Hansen undershirt, ski pants, turtleneck, sweater, fleece, insulated vest, balaclava and toque in addition to Erin’s “big red parka” and my sorels. It would have been nice to be up about 10 rows, since more than a few plays were obstructed by the players’ bench, or the camera cart, or people walking back and forth (or standing) in front of us.

I won’t mention the drunk guy that almost got his ass kicked.

Vanier fast approaches, and despite the fact I’m sick, and the weather is sicker, I will be there. There are tickets in the paper listed at $300 for a pair – in the corner of the endzone. Given the forecast is for a high of -21 and snow, I don’t know that there will be a lot of takers. I’ve got my gear all planned out, and ready to roll.

Huskie Fever has gripped the city though, and it will be crazy. Pandemonium. Insanity personified. I will count the number of toga-wearers for you.

The weekend was a good recharge. Saturday, William and I went for a bus ride adventure, while Erin was at a meeting with Julia. We went downtown, and didn’t really do much of anything. We did see the Vanier Cup however. William was confused because it’s not the Grey Cup, even though it’s grey.

I watched two football games this weekend as well. The Mitchell Bowl was fantastic, and a credit to CIS football. It doesn’t hurt that the Huskies won, leading to a hometown Vanier appearance. Still, it was a great game, with some huge plays both ways. I was particularly impressed that the Huskies stuck with their running game, and made it work, even when they were down. It should be an incredible atmosphere next weekend at Giffiths for the big game.

The other game I watched was the Grey Cup. Decent game, though not a classic by any stretch. There were some nice plays on both sides of the ball, and the better team wound up winning.

Poker was good last night – I wound up even for the evening – a little disappointing, but I played some hands poorly that cost me a lot of money. When I got home, the kids were asleep. That doesn’t usually happen, so they must have been pretty tired.

Julia’s been sick the last couple of days, though it sounds like she’s maybe feeling a little better today. I think Erin will be posting some pictures – either today or this weekend. (Note to Erin – they’re there waiting for you to post them…)

Knowing is half the battle

I’ve been pretty uninspired to write on here lately – there isn’t much going on in our world. We did have Jim, Judy and Jess over for supper last night. We hadn’t seen them in a while, so that was good. William and Judy played in the playroom for a while, then after supper, William and Jim did some minor roughhousing. Both William and Julia were laughing belly laughs at various points of the night, which is always nice.

While Erin was trying to put Julia to sleep, William and I watched the end of My Favorite Spy – A Bob Hope/Hedy Lamarr movie. Some of Hope’s physical comedy had William in stitches, even though I don’t think he knew what was going on (I’d watched the first 2/3 of the movie without him.)

Who’s not gonna take what?

It’s supposed to get pretty warm here over the next few days – even a little rain tomorrow apparently. Should make for some crazy driving conditions.

For whatever reason, I really enjoy pushing people out when they’re stuck. So far I’ve only pushed out two vehicles this year. The second one was yesterday, and when I initially tried to push the car out, it didn’t move an inch. I pushed from the front though, and it didn’t take much effort to get it moving. I don’t know how long they’d been stuck there, but there were 5 people standing around and watching. (4 girls in the tween age range, and the passenger of the car, who got out as I walked up.) Anyway, hopefully the mild temperatures can hold for a week until Vanier Cup time – also hopefully the Huskies can win their game in Ottawa this weekend, to turn Vanier Cup into the best home game ever. I’ll be there, front row, centre (ok, so not quite centre, but front row unfortunately – I’d much rather be up 10-12 rows.)
